Injectable Fillers
Perhaps the most exciting advance in aesthetic treatment is the continuing development of new fillers that can be injected into the facial tissue to plump up wrinkles and add volume to lips, cheeks and other areas.  Each of the injectable fillers available is ideal for some applications, and not as beneficial for others.  A filler can provide a temporary solution or allow you to get an idea of what a more permanent option would look like, but it does not offer the same permanence of surgical lifting or placing a permanent implant under the tissue.  The major benefit to injectable fillers is that, except for minor bruising, they require little or no downtime and most deliver immediate, visible results.

Restylane – Since earning FDA approval in 2003, Restylane has become a household word to people who want to reduce the effects of aging without surgery by plumping up the skin or creating fuller lips.  Restylane is a gel made of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body.  Because it is a form of a substance already present in the body, allergic reactions are unlikely and no tests are needed prior to the first treatment.  Restylane usually lasts around six months before retreatment is required.  To find out more, visit www.restylane.com.

Radiesse® – A mineral formulation similar to the material found in bones and teeth, Radiesse earned FDA approval for cosmetic use in 2006.  As one of the longer lasting  fillers, Radiesse works especially well in filling the deeps folds around the nose and mouth and is also FDA approved to correct facial fat loss.  Allergic reactions are extremely rare, so no allergy testing is required.   Because Radiesse particles are large, it’s not recommended for augmenting the lips, but since it is expected to last a year or longer, it is a good choice for filling other facial areas.  To find out more, visit www.radiesse.com.

JUVÉDERM™ – The most recently approved hyaluronic acid product, JUVÉDERM earned FDA approval in 2006 to treat facial lines and creases.  Similar to Restylane, JUVÉDERM is a gel hyaluronic acid that offers a small particle size, especially beneficial for augmenting lips.  According to JUVÉDERM’s maker, the product offers a special formulation that creates a smooth gel that’s easy to inject.  Results are expected to last six months or longer.  To learn more, visit www.juvedermcomingsoon.com.

Sculptra Aesthetic – Sculptra Aesthetic is a new type of facial injectable made from poly-L-lactic acid, which helps to replace lost collagen. It helps correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles, and folds, that appear with aging by replacing lost collagen. The main ingredient is a biocompatible, biodegradable synthetic material that has been used by physicians for decades. To find out more, visit www.sculptra.com.

The above represent the injectable fillers most commonly used by Dr. Sykes. There are several other options approved by the FDA and used by Dr. Sykes, including ArteFill, collagen, Zyderm, Zyplast, CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast. Others injectable products are under development and more continue to gain FDA approval.  If you have heard of a product not listed above, feel free to ask your doctor about it.
